A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
