Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
